Ribbon Storage

To demonstrating this project to you we show it uncovered... but you can cover it with fabric, paper, paint etc. This can also be made with any type of box or hinged container you can find at a dollar store!

I became so tired of spools of ribbon coming undone and digging through drawers to see if I had ribbon that matched that I made a storage/dispensing box for my ribbon spools. The plus side of these boxes is that the ribbon stays neat and organized, you can see what you have a glance, the ribbon pulls right through the hole in box (no need to open lid to use), and because they are covered in the fabric of your choice, they can fit into any decor without being obvious.

Directions:
1. 1 shallow box. Baby-shoe boxes work well.
2. Spray box and lid with spray adhesive and cover with fabric of choice.
3. Using a razor blade to cut a narrow dowel rod the length of the box.
4. Thread spools of ribbon on the dowel rod.
5. Using a hole punch, punch as many holes as you have spools of thread/ribbon down the length of box.
6. Place dowel rod with spools of ribbon in box and thread an inch or 2 of each ribbon through hole.
7. Replace lid on box.

Thrifty Home Made Wood Furnisher Polish

For one of the thriftiest green cleaners around, simply mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar and a couple of drops of olive oil. You can adjust the amount of olive oil, depending on how much moisture you want to put into your wood furniture. Just rub your homemade cleaner on with a cloth, and breathe easy (literally), knowing that this green cleaner won’t damage your health. Give it a try!

Dogs are one thing. But come on, can you really train a cat?
True, it’s a lot easier to train a dog. But you can walk cats on a harness out­doors and you can teach them to do basic things, like sit or come, using food rewards. You just have to be more patient.

Okay,  let’s  start  with scratching up the furni­ture. How do you get your cat to cut it out?
Scratching is a natural behavior for cats—they do it to remove the dead outer layer of their claws, to mark territory with the scent glands in their paws and just to get exercise. Since you can’t stop the behavior you need to give your cat some­thing that’s okay to scratch. Cats like the feel of rough, irregular surfaces, which is why most scratch­ing posts are carpeted. Put one right beside the piece of furniture your cat has been using and encourage it to scratch that instead.

What about a cat that suddenly stops using the litter box?
First, check with your vet to see if there’s an underlying medical condi­tion such as a urinary tract infection. Then it’s time to play detective. Is the litter box near its food or water? They don’t like that. Is the litter clean? Has the arrival of a new baby or animal in the household upset the cat? Sometimes cats don’t like a particular brand of litter, so if you decided to change it recently, switch back.

So many cats insist on drinking out of faucets. What’s up with that?
Cats love running water, probably because it’s cool and fresh. You can buy a water fountain that’s made specifically for cats. It’s basically a plug-in water bowl with a reser­voir. The device recirculates water, so it’s always running. Put the fountain next to the faucet the cat has been drinking from and gradually move it from there to wherever you want it.

How do I keep my cat off the kitchen counter tops? Give it something more interesting to do. Put a climbing tree right in the kitchen and buy new cat toys. Also, cut clutter. The more stuff on the coun­ter, the more appealing it is to a cat.

Fair Favorites: Deep Fried Candy Bars

1 C. milk
1 Tbsp. of vegetable oil
1 C. all purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
a pinch of salt
1. Combine egg, milk and vegetable oil in a cup. In a bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix well with a whisk. Cover and chill for a few minutes as you heat the oil.
2. Use a chocolate covered candy bar for best results and make sure that it is chilled, some bars work better if frozen (Mars is the “traditional” bar but Snickers, Almond Joy, and even Twix and Kit Kat will work.) After the candy bars are chilled and cut remove the batter form the refrigerator and adjust the consistency if necessary.
3. Heat about 4cups of oil or shortening in a medium skillet to 385 F. Drop the chilled candy bar in the batter and gently place into the oil. Cook only until the outside is golden. Remove and drain on brown paper. Allow to cool a minute, the inside can easily burn your mouth

If you are whipping fresh cream, make sure you chill bowls, beaters and cream before starting. Get them good and cold. It will give the best results.

Slow cookers make great servers for hot cider and also hot chocolate. Keep them on warm for as long as you like, and there’s no need to reheat — it’s always the right temperature.

Never, never, never serve roasted poultry right away. Always let it stand for 15 to 25 minutes after roasting to allow the juices to redistribute. You will have juicier meat, and the bird will be easier to carve.

For wood floors, make sure you dust-mop regularly. Dirt can scratch up your floors. Use a mop with a head that can be popped into the washer, and do so regularly.

Plastic grocery bags always come in handy. Store them in empty tissue boxes for the car or bathroom, or use an empty 12-pack soda box to store even more under your kitchen sink or in the garage.

To keep small screws in place, like the ones in sunglasses or eyeglasses, dab the screw with clear nail polish. It gets into the cracks and keeps it in place, but you can unscrew it if you need to.

Rub a little petroleum jelly over the shower-curtain rod to help metal curtain rings glide better.

Before you wash a load of towels, dampen one and use it to wipe down the sides and top of your washer and dryer. Then just toss the towel in with the load.
