Christmas Tree Ornament Handprint Keepsake
Use favorite colored ornaments either made from plastic or glass (caution should be taken when working with children and glass ornaments). ‘Paint’ child’s hand using white (or choose a color and be bold) finger paint. Have them grab a hold of the bottom of the bulb making sure not to squeeze bulb or to move once hand has made contact with the bulb. Have the child gently remove their fingers first by pulling straight off. Then remove palm. Decorate the ‘snowmen’. You might want to spray a protective coating of polyurethane to keep the paint from peeling. You could also use glue instead of paint and just glitter the whole hand. Great keepsake and would be a perfect gift for grandparents, uncles and aunts.
Painting – Considering Color and Design
The color of a room can affect the way that it feels in a big way. You will do well toe ensure that you think carefully about the way in which you are going to decorate your home, as the feeling that color and designs can give a place will be instrumental in making your house a home.
It is sometimes difficult to know where to start, so aside form the pointers below, have a flick through a couple of design magazines and blogs for inspiration as to what kind of thing you want to do with your space. Spend some time looking at swatches, and put testers up when you know that you are definitely going to paint the walls. Some people make the mistake of putting small testing swatches of color near to each other, and this can make it hard to get an impression of how the room will look when you have the full walls covered in that color. Try to go large, and if the color is going to be butted up against another color, then do the swatches close to the other color, and away form the other examples that you are to choose from.
One thing that you must keep in mind when you are looking through your design inspiration sources, is the size of the room and the type of room that you are dealing with. You may love the look of a the large ball room in the palace of versailles, but unfortunately, not many people have the same amount of space, nor the level of incredible detailing required to pull of the same style and color that was used there. Try to look at spaces that are similarly sized and shaped to your rooms, to ensure that you don’t go for something that looks good in the magazine, but feels ridiculous in your flat! The general rule is that darker colors will make a room look smaller, but in the sense that you might want to cultivate a feeling of intimacy with the color, this might not matter.
Many people go for plain white, and it is a color that will never clash nor go out of fashion, however, you do need to make sure that your walls are pristine if you are going to go with such a clean color, as any grubby marks or cracks in the walls will create a feeling of dirtiness and dilapidation pretty quickly!
Have a think about the detailing in the furnishing of the rooms, and how that may affect the painting of them. Do you have high skirting, or an architrave running around the top of the room? Are the door and window famers ornate or plain? These things will affect the look of the room, and choosing whether or not to paint them the same colors as the walls is difficult. Detailing should be done in white realistically if it is going to be different from the rest of the wall color, but some pick their window frames out in black for a bit of a different feel. If you have tall skirting and an architrave, then a deep color and white detailing will give a great feeling of old grandness to the room, especially if it is a big one! This is quite a bold statement to make however, and you should certainly think carefully about it in advance, as making the wrong stepo with such a thing could leave you feeling like you had over egged it a little!

DIY – Save Money by Making Your Own Furnishings
There are plenty of creative ways in which you can use DIY in the home to ensure that you are not splashing out on expensive furnishings. If you are a student, or you just want to do things a little more cheaply, it can make very little sense to be spending hundreds of pounds on things, when you could be ‘upcycling’ old furniture or making new stuff! Many people now go in for a certain style that is called ‘Shabby Chic’ which uses lots of reclaimed wood, battered antiques and repainted items, to make a feeling of carefully curated casualness throughout the home, a sort of run down affair that has been painstakingly achieved in many cases! Of course this style comes from seeing houses where people have decked out their rooms in a way that showed them to be indifferent to trends and luxury brands, but rather more interested in how things go together, and showing their own personality through it. Much of this style comes from doing things cheaply and for yourself, and if you are creative and think carefully about such things, then you too can achieve this.
Have a think about what you need for your room. Say you need a coffee table, what kind of material would suit the room, and what size do you need? Many styles now use discreetly modern surfaces, shiny, and dark colored, rather than expensive wood veneers. You should have a look around local car boot sales, and on gum tree to see if anyone is giving away a nice old desk, or an interesting looking door, that you could make a table surface from. For instance, a dilapidated old desk could have the surface removed, sanded, and re varnished to look like a beautifully conditioned table top. You could then place it on a railway sleeper or two and make a perfect coffee table. Think about the juxtaposition of materials – painting a railway sleeper a deep lacquered black, or even a bright color could make it sit strangely but stylishly with the table top, giving you the kind of intriguing coffee table that prompts people to ask of the designer’s name! Of course the main fun in all of this is telling them that you made it!
Try finding old scaffold boards for various uses. You can use them as is for interesting shelves, or cut them to size and nail them to wooden palettes to make an interesting looking platform bed! Again, if you wanted something a little less shabby, then you can sand and paint them any color you want. Try a glossy white for that beautiful french look, or matte black for a more modern, tactile feel. The most important thing is that you match it with the room. If your room is a fully carpeted living room with white walls, then you want something simple that won’t clash. If your room is old fashioned, then why not think about going a little more modern to offset the antique furnishings? Modern houses look great with a couple of antique bits in there, but perhaps try getting them cheaply and refinishing them in a new color to fit your home, and make them you own, as otherwise it may end up looking like a museum of design, rather than a harmonious living space! You can do absolutely anything you want to, but be sure to research all the methods beforehand, and be safe when you are carrying out all of the processes.
