Review: Segmation – A Digital Way To Paint

I have to say I was most impressed by a site I recently stumbled upon and thought I would tell you more about it. I tried the free version and knew I was hooked. Now mind you I am a grown man and have an ability to draw portraiture in almost exact likeness (or so I am told) but I found myself stuck there doodling along. I painted step-by-step until I had completed a piece of artwork. I was most impressed. I found my mind working hard and became engrossed in this process which was a good thing this week since we lost a family member this week. Before I knew it I had passed about twenty minutes and ended with a surprised smile on my face.

It is just a site that made me have twenty minutes of fun and happiness and of a nice moment of relaxation. Segmation digital color by number is a relatively new program and is a small, upstart family business. They call this “the art of peaceful imaging” and it truly is a Zen experience for all ages. I initially purchased the affordable program this last fall and use it daily. I enjoy it to unwind after a busy day with work and family pressures. My five year old just loves it! Recently, I have begun to take it into preschool with me several times a week and my three and four years olds are growing more proficient with number recognition (and taking turns) every day. The privilege of my laptop in the classroom is also advancing their technology and fine motor skills. The program is also available for your iPad or iPhone, https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/segplay-mobile/id395127581, and, thus, convenient for the kids on road trips and waiting rooms.

There are so many great features in the Segmation program! Different setting allow you to switch modes and play one number at a time or without any numbers at all in case one would like to choose where to place color. You can reset each picture to begin again, so the children tend not to fight if the one they wanted has been taken over by a classmate or sibling. My favorite feature, though, is the direct link that takes you to a shop with a fairly abundant selection of art to please any palette. The Classics are available, such as Vincent van Gogh, Michelangelo, Albrecht Durer, Rubens, and Manet. More modern works are offered, like Paul Klee or Gustav Klimt.

There are fun holiday packs and gorgeous scenic photography offered, too. I feel that all I am missing, as a customer, is the availability of fun and funky illustrations more representative of today’s art movements and attractive to a broader range of youth and young adult tastes.

Mother’s Day / Father’s Day Card / Plaque

mom mother mothers day card footprint handprints craft art gift loveThis was actually done on a wooden plaque that you can get at your local craft store for about $1.50. You could do this on a card stock sheet of paper for a great Mother’s Day card as well. Use watercolors (on paper) and acrylic (on wooden plaque) and brush back and forth in long strokes going off the sides with each stroke. Use a variation of your Mother’s favorite colors. When done use water based poster paint (used the color white here) and make an impression of hand and feet then finish it off with an ‘L’ and an ‘E’. Something more than just a store bought card that Mom or a Grandma would love to cherish for years to come. I think the same design with blue’s in the background would also work for a card for Father’s Day – I know I would be happy to receive it.

These frames are easy to make for gifts and can contain a 2 pictures or artwork from a little one. You can obtain these at almost any stores these days and they are really cheap. You take the cardboard insert out and are going to use this as a guide to get a photo or a piece of artwork. If you want to print a photo out measure this and take the dimensions to your desktop publisher to prepare image for printing. If you are doing this from artwork or a photo already printed trace this onto your photo or artwork and cut out. If the photo or artwork isn’t big enough you can add a border to create a tight fit. On the outside you can glue jewels, sewing notions, stickers etc. You can do this on both sides  and can add embellishments around the edges.

Old Jars Made New

Use empty mayonnaise and pickle jars to store spices in the kitchen or crafts. Clean jars completely and dry. Attach wooden drawer pull (hardware stores have these for about 50 cents) with E6000 and let dry. You can also add a screw from the inside of the lid into the drawer pull for a secure lid. Spray paint the lid/drawer pull with a color of your choice and let dry. You might want two coats on here to give a nice covering. Spray or brush a clear coat of polyurethane to make sure the paint does not get scratched off.

Lady Bug Painted Rocks

Such a simple little thing to do with the kids on a boring summer afternoon. Rocks should be cleaned with an old scrubber and dried overnight. Use acrylic paints and start with covering the rock with black paint. You may want to make two coats allowing to dry completely in between. Follow the simple design from the picture and paint the areas red where indicated and dry. Top with a clean black line down the middle of the back and add black dots on the back also. Add a black dot in the center just after where the red starts on the back. Add two white dots on the face for the eyes. Let dry. When it is all dry coat with two coats of polyurethane to seal. Would make a great gift for the wee ones to give to parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles. Can be placed back in a garden or used as a creative paperweight.
