Paw Patrol Cake Idea & How To

1909745_1153686294662182_9047232736809928409_nMake three eight inch circle cakes and one 9 by 13 inch cake. Cutting a one quarter wedge out of each eight inch circle cake and place on each corner of the nine by thirteen cake. On the fourth corner wedge the corners together to match the other corners as seen in photo. Fill in the cracks with buttercream and coat to give a clean crumb coat. Refrigerate. Put a smooth final coat and decorate like seen in this picture.

The logo comes from a printed picture from the internet. Print several pictures the size and carefully cut each little piece out. Use a toothpick trace each piece starting in the center and moving out. With icing cover the lines you made and fill working from inside out.

Make sure your cake board (19 x 21) has a scoop under each corner (smoothed out) of icing to make sure the cake does not slip.

    • Hi, you use the first cake layout photo and double it for one additional layer – you don’t have to do this if you do not want to – it is a beautiful cake either way. After you layer the cake fill in gaps with icing – refrigerate to cool – then crumb coat – cool in fridge – then final coat – hope this helps

      • Hi Michelle – the idea of crumb coating is to make a thin coat of icing cover the entire cake. If you are using a cake as is coming from the pan you can get by without it (I still do it). Basically I take a portion of icing and add a few drops of water until I get a consistency that is thinner than your regular icing. It basically keeps the ‘crumbs’ out of the final icing work you are doing. You can use a spatula and wipe on and fill the grooves around the four circles you cut. When you are done with a crumb coating it should all be iced and gaps made even with the cake itself so no indentations show. You should then chill the entire cake in the fridge for an hours making the icing used for crumb coating hard. This does two things – it allows easy icing for final presentation and cools the icing that you are putting on. Some do not do this step at all but unless you are a professional who has done it hundreds of times I strongly suggest it – it just makes the final presentation cleaner. Hope I helped!

    • Hi, I only use buttercream and avoid fondant as best I can in any cake ever done. It is a taste preference – and yes, this was done in all buttercream. It takes me a lot of work to get the icing that smooth but I keep messing with it until it looks alright. The picture does not show because it is all white but there are a lot of imperfections. I hope I helped – and send us a picture to show on this post when you are done!

  1. Going to try making this for my granddaughters’ 4th birthday – wish me luck! Mimi always makes her cake and she wants Paw Patrol this year, but with all the characters – so I’m going to find small figures and put on top.

  2. Do you think this could work with whipped cream frosting? If you have any tips to share, that would be greatly appreciated. Hoping to have a cake that is going to light up my daughter’s eyes.

    • I think this type of frosting would work but buttercream would be best. If you want to do all the white in the whipped cream frosting I think it would work – but the trim I would use buttercream. They make it easy for you now because you can actually get butter cream in a can so you re not stuck with that crisco tasting stuff – yuck! The only problem with buttercream is it has a slight cream coloring and is not stark white. I think I can get past the coloring to have the deliciousness of the buttercream though.

    • Hi, the answer really depends on how big of slices you want to serve your guest. The answer to that is are you feeding your guests first so they might not want a big piece or is this all they wil be eating except finger foods where they may want more. I have seen a half sheet pan cake feed thirty – I have seen it feed a lot less as well. One secret is that you can make your cake very deep and serve the top half and then serve the bottom half – you would need to liberally ice in between so the second layer has icing on it for your guests. I think you could get this cake to feed thirty or more with just an average sized piece of cake more if you served it with ice cream and made the cake pieces smaller. I have found also when serving to not just cut the cake up and put them out to eat – but use one side of the cake to cut smaller pieces and the other larger pieces. Or – you could just cut the cake into smaller pieces and welcome people to come back for seconds once everyone has had a piece that would like one.

  3. This cake is amazing and I’m planning on making it for my soon to be 2yr old who loves paw patrol. Now I looked on amazon, Walmart and haven’t found a cake board this size. Where could I get one? And for the crumb part you recommend buttercream but could I use whipped topping for the rest? Do you think I could use a sugar sheet on top instead of the logo?

    • Great Questions: Yes a sugar sheet would work wonderfully and would save you a lot of time. User icing with small star tip to make a nice edge around to make to become part of the cake. Yes, Whipped icing could be used – it is really preference. Make sure to keep temperature cooler with whipped icings. Unfortunately there is no way to get around actually buying a cake board the perfect size. Lowes and Home Depot carry a wide variety of boards that are 2 ft x 4 ft and will cut it to desire. Sometimes they may charge for the second cut at 25 cents. Sand this down and cover with a heavy piece of aluminum with the shiny on the top – on bottom tape heavily. Would love to see a finished cake when you are down and would be happy to include a copy of it with your name at the bottom of article. Happy Birthday to your son.

  4. My daughter picked this out for her 4th birthday party in a few weeks! I cheated and ordered the logo, paw prints, and her name off Etsy lol. I have also never crumb-coated before, any tips?
Got a feeling i’m going to be doing a lot of baking and decorating the day of her birthday in order to get ready for her party the next day.

    • There is no better way then to practice – make a cake recipe in a round 8 inch pan – slice and practice crumb coating the area where you sliced – I have taken a basting silicone brush to brush on thin layers of icing (just add teaspoons of water and mix one by one to get desired thickness) – you want the consistency to be a little more watery then Elmers glue – if you are a bit more practiced by the time the actual cake decorating time comes around you can use regular icing using a spatula and gently wipe the icing on – you can not do this slow or by going back and fourth with the spatula – this will either pull chunks of the cake off or bring numerous crumbs to surface – just remember if the icing has some crumbs in it it is fine – you will be covering it up with a final coating of icing that wont bring the crumbs up – best of luck – please send pics

  5. I am a little confused. In the instructions you say to bake 4-8 inch cakes and cut a quater of each cake out and place them at the corners of the 9 x 13. The picture actually shows 3 round cakes with the cut out quarter as the final corner. Is this correct? What is the 4th round cake used for?

  6. How many boxes of cake mix did you need to do a two layer of This? I’m planning this for a 5th bday party, I want to do the rounds in vanilla and center cake in chocolate

    • The rounds I would do 1.5 boxes and the sheet cake I would do four for the sheet – this will be for 1 layer in 4″ deep pans. (so double if you want to make some height – but that would feed a lot of people. Either be prepared to maybe send chunk home with people or you might want to consider using dummy foam cakes for the rounds (because the rounds would be cheaper to buy then the rectangle). – to use foam just pipe right onto the foam (some say wrap it in plastic wrap and then pipe but you do run the risk of the icing sliding). I find Styrofoam with icing easy to clean. Scrape off excess icing and then soak in a clean pail or bucket overnight and then spray with warm water. If there is anything else please let me know!

  8. I am thinking about attempting this cake for my daughters birthday and I am just wondering what you put in between the 2 layers of cake??

    Like

    • There are lots of things to put between layers. The simplest would be to layer in your icing. This icing could have chocolate chips, coconut or some other soft candy mixed in. You could spread icing on the bottom layer and then spread strawberry preserves on top of that and then press cakes together. Hope this gives you a couple of ideas and hope your daughter has a great birthday!

    • I typically will make the cake, fill and level the cakes with a crumb coat (yes I am old fashioned) wrap really well and freeze for no more then 2 days if I am in a crunch on time. I thaw 1/2 way before adding icing and decorations. I then have it go into a fridge. In over ten years of making cakes I have never had any issues doing it this way and the cake is always nice and moist and delicious.
